Our Approach is Different.

At Oregon EMDR, LLC, we specialize in cutting-edge treatments to trauma.  All of our clinicians are trained in Somatic and Attachment Focused (SAFE) Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR), Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (SP), or both.

While traditional talk therapy - a "Top-Down Approach" can be helpful in providing support, there are limits to how much it can effectively help people achieve lasting symptom relief.  Pat Ogden, developer of Sensorimotor Psychotherapy states it this way:   "For the traumatized individual... the intensity of trauma-related emotions and sensorimotor reactions hinders the ability of top-down processing to dominate subcortical activity."  Put another way, sometimes we can't "make" ourselves stop feeling afraid or angry or stop ourselves from shaking or panicking even when we want more than anything to do so.  Sometimes parts of the brain responsible for our feelings and physical reactions hijack our ability to calm ourselves or recognize that we're no longer in a dangerous situation.

EMDR and SP are considered "Bottom-Up Approaches" to therapy which engage the parts of the brain related to emotion and physiology in order to integrate new information more efficiently and effectively than "talking about" difficulties.

We know this may be a little confusing on first read which is why ongoing education about the therapeutic plan and our approach is an integral part of our treatment.
